People aren’t kidding when they say the city moves fast, and they certainly aren’t kidding when they say in the country things are a bit more laid back.

They were taking turns talking excitedly about things that were, for the most part, flying right over my head. I looked around and realized at that moment I was quite possibly the dumbest person in the room…
The hike was around 4 miles round trip at an elevation of just over 2000. That meant 2 miles up and 2 miles down. Seemed simple enough… or so I thought.
The first time I ever went hiking in Washington I knew I was hooked. Even though there were a few moments where I thought I was going to throw up, pass out, or worse…fall off the side of the mountain.

I was going to an art museum one afternoon where parking usually runs about $15 an hour (in case you’ve never been to Seattle – parking prices are nuts). As I was looking for a parking spot I saw a man start walking toward my vehicle.

This kick in the ass that I’m referring to has happened to me more than once, and it’s always happened at weird times.
It’s come in different forms & always when I least expect it. But being that I’m closing in on 30 I’m beginning to see a bit of pattern. Its always come exactly when I needed it.
One of these “kick’s in the ass” happened tonight. And it came with a few scrapes & bruises this time as well. Oh, lucky me.

It’s 4 pm and I’m sitting at a kitchen table facing the Juan de Fuca as the smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the air. Outside and straight ahead of me I see the wind swaying the trees and encouraging the waves.
Today I find myself sitting in one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been in my entire life. I’m in a remote cottage that’s located on the top of a cliff in Northwestern Washington. To my left, there are the snow-capped Olympic Mountains and to my right, our hillside overlooks the Juan de Fuca waterway. I’m surrounded in every direction by natural beauty, it is breathtaking and the first place I’ve ever been that I never want to leave.
